PATHWAYS TO HOPE

On September 15th, 2016, Gentle Path Counselling Services hosted an evening of Hope, Vision and Action at the enchantingly beautiful Imperial Theatre. Pathways to Hope was an inspirational night where business leaders, nonprofit representatives, and community organizers were given a platform to discuss the issues troubling our city. Jim Hennessey, the Executive Assistant of MP Wayne Long, Randy Hatfield, the Executive Director of the Human Development Council, and Terry Blizzard, founder and owner of Afterburn Performance, spoke genuinely and passionately about important issues in Saint John. Similarly, the Leaders of Tomorrow proved that socially conscious entrepreneurialism is on the rise. From child sexual abuse awareness to housing rights for the disabled, the Leaders of Tomorrow shared their Missions as well as their personal stories.

Keynote Speaker Frank O’Dea delivered an inspirational speech brimming with empathy, kindness and humility. Frank spoke not only of his entrepreneurial success, but also of the challenges of addiction, homelessness and unemployment. He encouraged both community resiliency and individual agency by delivering a humanizing account of his own life journey. Frank O’Dea emphasized the importance of "Hope, Vision and Action" and urged the audience to engage with the city and mobilize towards change. Thanks to both Frank O’Dea and Gentle Path volunteers, Pathways to Hope was an evening enjoyed by all who attended.

Spectacular Fall Fundraiser Frank O’Dea

Franks O’Dea’s rags to riches story of triumph over adversity is one that is amazing and truly inspiring. From living on the street, and against all odds, O’Dea became one of Canada’s most successful and celebrated entrepreneurs, founding numerous businesses, including The Second Cup. The Government of Canada sought him out to found the Canadian Landmine Foundation and with help from the United Nations, Sir Paul McCartney and Colin Powell, he launched the worldwide charity, Night of a Thousand Dinners. A recipient of two university degrees and the Order of Canada, Frank O’Dea’s inspiring story is retold in his book “When All You Have is Hope”.
